My little lunchtime lampshade DIY makeover (cost $0)

I'm so excited about this simple, quick little project I did yesterday! I've been thinking about it for a week, trying to figure out what to do with that lampshade I mentioned last week. Here it is:

BEFORE

I got the lamp last weekend on my thrift store trip, but I've had the lampshade for quite a while. After I put it on the lamp, I felt like it needed a little sumpin' sumpin'. So, I thought about putting some little sparkly, dangly things on the bottom edge, but I've done that to some other lamps, and I wanted to do something different to this shade. And then I thought . . . pillow cases! Yes, pillow cases! I have some older, unmatched pillow cases that have some fun prints on them, and my mom will probably recognize the one I used (hi, mom), and I thought it would be great to cut a swatch off of one of them and cover the lampshade with it! I think my husband was skeptical. But, I had vision!

So, yesterday, I picked out the one I wanted to use, and on my lunch break, I got to work.

I first cut along the seems of the pillow case, to open it up and figure out which part of the pattern I wanted to use on the shade. Then, I did some rough guestimating and cut out enough cloth to cover the shade and pulled out my handy, dandy spray adhesive, and my hot glue gun. I just let the glue gun heat up while I was adhering the fabric to the shade.

I sprayed small sections of the shade with the adhesive and smoothed the pillow case fabric onto the wet parts, being careful to smooth out the wrinkles as I went. Oh, and it was important for me to match up the shade's existing seem with the new seem I was creating. I simply folded the last bit of fabric under to make the new seem, and sprayed it well with the adhesive.

I used my hot glue gun to hold the extra fabric to the inside of the lamp shade, like so . . .

And, here's the shade when I was done. Now to see what it looks like on my new lamp!

Drum roll, please . . .

AFTER

Isn't it the brightest, cheeriest little thing? I love it! Oh, and I already had all of the supplies for this project, so the total cost was $0 . . . yep, FREE! And the time I invested? 30 minutes. I'm just sayin' . . .

This weekend's thrifty treasures

To celebrate my birthday (which is today), my wonderful husband sent me out on a thrifty shopping spree this past weekend, childcare included. :o) I'm not one for presents, but I love getting "experiences" as gifts, so this was a score! I spent several hours between two local thrift stores, and besides coming home with some cute clothes, I also picked up these fabulous home decorating finds.

This awesome swing-arm iron lamp (below) cost me $3.50, but I'm sure the original buyer paid way more than that. It didn't come with a shade, so I just used a bland one that I already had. It needs some sprucing up, but it makes me happy to see it sitting on my desk.

I picked up this frame (which I love) for $6.50. I'm debating whether or not to paint the whole thing, just the green stripe, or leave it alone. It looks nice just as it is, but I'm undecided. I'm also debating whether or not to just use it as it is, or put something in it. Thoughts?

I also picked up these two fabulous mirrors (the bigger one for $2.50, the small one for $2.50), the candle holder ($1.50), and the other frame with the ugly print ($2.50). I plan on painting everything, and gutting the one picture. I'll use that frame for something else. I'm just not sure what color to paint everything, and still need to decide where I'll use them.

Here's a closer look at the picture I'll be gutting (below). I plan on painting and using the frame.

I also picked up this wonderful, larger mirror (below) for $4.50. It's extremely heavy, and must be leaded glass. The frame itself isn't really pretty. It's rather scuffed up, and needs to be painted. But, what color?

Here's a glimpse of the back. It was framed in 1959! Pretty cool!

I found this piece of fabric (below) that I instantly loved. It was just 50¢, and I plan on framing it, as fun wall art.

Now, about that green and white frame . . . I discovered that I liked one of the mirrors in it. I'm contemplating combining the two, like this:

What do you think? I'll definitely paint the mirror's frame, but I liked the combination. We'll see. Another option is this . . . here's the piece of artwork that's hanging over our mantel right now:

I'm thinking about taking it out of it's current frame and putting into this new frame. The mat matches the green in the frame, and really makes the piece work. Thoughts? Mirror or picture? Or neither?

I love bargain shopping! What a great birthday present. Now, I can't wait to get my spray paint together and get to creating. Oh boy!

UPDATE: Here's my easy lampshade redo for the lamp at the beginning of this post.

I'm sharing this on:

Thrifting!

Hi, all! My birthday is tomorrow, and as part of my present, my husband sent me out thrifting this weekend, and I had a blast. Besides some clothes, I walked away with some really fun home decor items. I've taken some pics, and will be uploading those tomorrow at some point. More on all my wonderful bargains, coming tomorrow! To give you a sneak peek, I came home with a really fun new desk lamp, three fun new mirrors (one was framed in 1959), a candle holder, and a couple of great frames. Once I decide what I'm going to paint or not going to paint, I'll be sharing some fun before/afters, too.

We also have this dresser that I need some advice on. I'll be posting pics of that, too, and getting your advice on what I should do with it.

More on all of this, coming tomorrow!

DEAL ALERT: Get $ back for using reusable bags at Kroger!

My husband and I recently discovered this little deal-io on a grocery shopping trip to Kroger. Bring your own reusable shopping bags (ours were NOT purchased at Kroger), and they will give you 4¢ back for each bag! I know that's not a ton of cash, but it's something! Besides shopping their sales, and using your KrogerPlus card, it's a nice little bonus at the end of your bill. Oh, and if you don't want the 4¢, they'll give you fuel points instead!

Giveaway: Lora Elizabeth Stamped Jewelry at Craftaholics Anon (ends 4/21)

There's a fun new jewelry giveaway going on at Craftaholics Anonymous right now. Linda is giving away a $40 gift card to Lora Elizabeth Stamped Jewelry. Here are some of the photos from her blog:

Help from a friend

One thing about bargain shopping that I don't think I've ever mentioned before, is the power of talking to your friends. Are you looking for something particular? Talk about it. It's that easy.

I've been looking for a baby/kid-carrier hiking backpack for a while. I've been keeping my eyes open at the local consignment stores, Craigslist, etc. I found a really nice Kelty one about a year ago at our local Re-Kid for $40, but I passed it up thinking that I could get one cheaper. Ugh! I've been kicking myself ever since, for walking away from that deal. It was a good price! So, my search continued.

In a recent conversation with a friend from church, I mentioned that we were looking for one. She kindly offered to let us borrow theirs whenever we wanted. So nice!

Then, I recently got a Facebook post from her, informing me that her neighbor was cleaning out their garage or basement and offered them a baby/kid-carrier hiking backpack. Because they already have one, she almost passed it up, but then she remembered that I was looking for one. So, she snagged it for me! She mentioned that it would need to be cleaned off, but was in otherwise good condition. I didn't know what brand it was or anything. I was just excited!

We both attend a bi-weekly get-together with other women from our church, so she brought it with her last night. It's a Kelty!! And because of her, we got it for FREE! WOO-HOO! I'm so stoked! Here it is (before getting cleaned up):

Can you tell I'm excited? Well, I am! We're planning to use it this coming weekend!

So, never underestimate the power of talking to your friends about the things you're looking for. You just never know what will come of it!
