Cloth diapers on Good Morning America

Cloth diapers were the subject of conversation one morning this week on Good Morning America! This is exciting, because it's raising the awareness of cloth diapers and what an easy, green, cost-effective choice they are. According to the segment on GMA, 18 BILLION—that's right, BILLION—disposable diapers end up in our landfills each year, and they take several hundred years—yes, HUNDREDS—to decompose. Not to mention that that's YOUR MONEY in those landfills, just sitting there with poop on it. To diaper one child with disposables will cost $2000-3000 PER YEAR! Cloth diapers cost $0-800 for one child, and you can reuse them for your other children, as they come along. AND . . . you're not sending your money to sit in a landfill covered with poop for the next few hundred years. :o) Cloth diapers are much simpler and easy-to-use than people think, and when you think about the fact that you're doing your part to cut down on those 18 BILLION diapers that will be sitting in our landfills for the next few hundred years, it's an easy choice! View the segment with Sam Champion and Sara Snow on GMA.

For more information and a list of cloth diapering resources, read my post on why I chose to use cloth and how much money I'm saving.

Etsy It Up! is having a giveaway!

There's a giveaway going on over at Etsy It Up! where they're giving away a blog layout from Premades for a Purpose. I was just interested in the giveaway, when I stumbled over there, but I got really intrigued by the purpose behind Premades for a Purpose. The designer is Lena, and she's a mom. She's a mom who's hoping to adopt after many tries at having a baby, without success. So, she's designing super affordable blog layouts, in an effort to raise money for the adoption. Read more about her story here.

I am entering the giveaway, for sure, but Lena's story tugged at my heart. So, I had to blog about this giveaway, and about Premades for a Purpose, not just for the extra giveaway entry, but because a fellow mama's gotta help another mama out! Know what I mean? So, if you're looking to spruce up your blog, head on over to Premades for a Purpose, order up a super cute, funky new layout, and help Lena and her husband on the road to parenthood!

Oh, and if you want to win one of her layouts, visit Etsy It Up! for your chance to win. Or not. More chances for me if you don't. :o)

Two great, new posts on cloth diapering

I've preciously talked about our choice to use cloth diapers, and how much money we're saving by making that choice. And I often get asked about what we use, why we use it, and how to get started with cloth diapering. I'm no expert, but I can pass along the things that I've learned, and I'm constantly keeping my ear to the ground for good resources on this topic. That's why I'm sharing these two great, new posts on cloth diapering from Simple Organic:

A crafty little project: lamp and picture frames

If you remember, I recently completed a dramatic brass chandelier makeover for just $4.40, and I've been wanting to use the rest of my black spray paint. My trigger finger's been itchy, so I've been looking over our abode for things I can paint black, without going too crazy and painting everything I see. :) So, I did notice these simple, cheap wood frames that I bought way back in college at Wal-Mart for next to nothing, and I've been wanting to do something with them for quite some time. I grabbed them off the wall. I also noticed this cheap little glass lamp in our bedroom that had a brass base. I don't have a before pic of it, but when you see the "after" just imagine the body in glass, and then just the base in brass. I went to work . . .

Frames before:

After prepping my table with newspaper (lots and lots of newspaper), and making sure I had good ventilation, I laid out my frames, taped off the electrical parts of my lamp, and went to work. Helpful tip: when working with spray paint indoors, it's good to get some of those nose/mouth masks so you don't end up blowing black gunk out of your nose for the next couple of days. Also, something I didn't mention the last time, but had people ask me about—I used the type of spray paint that specifically listed metal (e.g. brass) and glass as surfaces it would adhere to.

The project in-process:

Frames drying:

Lamp drying:

Lamp after:

Frames after:

I was again amazed at what a nice look the black paint gave everything. And I already had the can of spray paint, so this project ended up costing me nothing! You gotta love that!

I didn't realize it, but yesterday's post was my 250th post! Congratulations to me! Later on this year in June, I'll be celebrating my 3rd bloggiversary (now, really—is that even a word?)! Can't believe it!

Now for the real reason I'm writing . . .

In yesterday's e-newsletter from Dave Ramsey, there was a link to some great bargaining tips, so I just had to share them with you. Check out his article "How to Negotiate for a Bargain." Then, come back and tell me what you think. Pretty good, huh?

Latest Baby Bargains, 3/6/10

I got up bright and early this morning to hit a local children's consignment sale, hosted at a local church. They have them about every six months, and I was there by around 8:15 AM. It's usually a two-day deal on a Friday and Saturday, with Saturday having special 1/2-off-everything-with-a-dot deals. So, I usually go on Saturday and only buy 1/2-off deals. They have everything you could possibly imagine for your infants, crawlers, toddlers, and on up.

The last time I went, I got some phenomenal deals, and this visit wasn't any different. Although, I had some things on my list that I really wanted to get, but they were all gone when I got there. :o( All their training potties and travel high chair boosters were gone. And I didn't see any baby carrier hiking backpacks. Boo! However, the deals I did get were pretty sweet:

  • 2T jeans............................................$1.50
  • 18 mo. Old Navy swimsuit...............$1.50
  • Learn-to-swim suit............................$2.00
  • WTP, Elmo, Blues Clues books.......$2.50
  • Tennis shoes.....................................$1.00
  • Old Navy sneakers...........................$1.00
  • Stride Rite shoes...............................$1.50
  • Baby Gap sneakers...........................$1.50
  • Sidewalk chalk.................................$1.00
  • Baby washcloths...............................$1.00
  • Tupperware snack bowls..................$3.50
  • Blue's Clues/Spot videos..................$0.50
  • TOTAL...........................................$19.61

Latest thrift store find

I love thrift stores! This should be no surprise to you. If I go too long between visits, I get a bit antsy, and start planning out my next visit. I wouldn't call it an obsession . . .

I went to Goodwill last weekend. I was looking for pants, but I struck out in that department. I was also looking for fleece scraps to use for cloth baby wipes—found a great piece for less than $1. Score! I was also looking for a teapot—struck out. And, while I wasn't really looking for them, I found a super cute pair of Andre Assous slides for our upcoming beach trip. I paid under $5 for them!

For my next trip, I'll be shopping for a few things:
  • fabric scraps for a DIY art project
  • pants
  • brown shoes
  • any home decorating steals

Entered another giveaway . . . cross your fingers!

Well, I've entered another giveaway—this time for a new blog makeover! Oh, I hope, hope, hope I win! I've needed design help with this blog for a long time. If you're curious, or want to enter too (or not—leave me more chances to win), check it out here. Cross your fingers . . .
